Luckily, it isn’t necessary to completely shave your head for any hair transplant. When we talk about shaving your hair, we mean, just in the donor area. Depending on the type of procedure Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) or Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), and your hair texture and pattern, certain areas of your head may have to be shaved in order to ensure the best results.
Do I have to shave my head for an FUT Hair Transplant?
With an FUT procedure, or Follicular Unit Transplantation, donor hair is removed by extracting a strip of tissue from the rear of your head. The area is then sutured, and the surrounding hair conceals the donor area. Because of this, shaving your head is not necessary to complete this procedure.
Do I have to shave my head for an FUE Hair Transplant?
With an FUE procedure, or, Follicular Unit Excision, each follicle is individually removed from the patient’s scalp. Since it’s easier to accurately identify and remove healthy follicles with shorter cut hair, most physicians prefer to buzz the donor area in order to provide maximum visibility.
In some cases, doctors can perform a “No Shave” FUE, but that varies by patient. Our Bosley hair specialist will work with you to help determine which procedure fits in with your needs and preferences.
Shaved hair depends on you
Your personal preference may ultimately determine what procedure is best for you. If you prefer not to shave your head, an FUT procedure might be your best choice. If you’re someone who doesn’t mind buzzing your hair for the procedure, then the FUE technique might be your first pick.
