Lasers or LEDs for Low Level Laser Therapy

While researching solutions that prevent hair loss and promote hair regrowth, you may have come across information on Low-Level Laser Therapy devices. Low-Level Laser Therapy, or LLLT, is one of the most promising new technologies when it comes to hair restoration. LLLT devices come with different methods for delivering energy to the scalp – the most common being lasers and LEDs (light-emitting diodes). Learning about the difference between the two can help your decision when it comes to your personal hair restoration journey.

How Low-Level Laser Therapy Works

LLLT works by using low level light to penetrate the scalp while delivering a precise dose of energy to hair follicles to help revive, re-stimulate and activate dormant hair follicles. Clinically proven to help stimulate cellular activity and blood circulation, LLLTs provide a new opportunity in hair loss treatment. This can be done using two different types of lights.

Laser Vs LED Effectiveness

While both lasers and LEDs have helped establish LLLT as a top choice in non-surgical hair treatments, the difference in effectiveness places them in their own categories.

Lasers can emit monochromatic and coherent light in a single wavelength, keeping the energy of the beam narrowly focused. Because of this, light can reach further and penetrate deeper into the hair follicle. A laser’s wavelength can be specifically optimized to 650 nanometers, which is widely considered the ideal wavelength for full light exposure.

LEDs are known to emit beams that are wider and less consistent, making it more difficult to penetrate farther into the scalp. LEDs cannot be tuned into specific wavelengths because they produce multiple at the same time. This makes it almost impossible for them to reach the hair follicle. Due to these disadvantages, LEDs aren’t as effective as lasers when it comes to reaching and stimulating hair follicles.

The Use of LED

The reason many devices choose to use LED is simply because they’re easier and more economical to manufacture– as opposed to lasers which are higher in price and harder to come by. Because of this, many manufacturers opt to use a combination of Lasers and LEDs to help cut production costs.
